T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings for Saridis of Athens
The house of Saridis established in 1867, reproduces authentic furniture from all styles and periods, but is most famous for contemporary recreations of classical ancient Greek furniture designs led by American designer T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings in the early 1960’s.
In 1960, Robsjohn-Gibbings partnered with Susan and Eleftherios Saridis, owners of Saridis of Athens, one of Europe’s finest cabinetmakers. For the next 15 years, they collaborated to produce the Klismos line of furniture, bringing classical forms into the mainstream of contemporary design. Robsjohn-Gibbings reproduced accurately the forms of ancient furniture using local walnut, leather and bronze fitting according to the materials and methods used by Greek artisans thousands of year earlier. It is a tribute to Gibbings that the Saridis line has never gone out of production.
